Miss-use of customers information

Godfrey made this Access to Information request to Uganda Communication Commission (UCC)

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

From: Godfrey

Dear Uganda Communication Commission (UCC),

Greetings

As you may be aware UCC mandated Telecommunication service providers under the Regulations of Interception of Communications Act 2010 to register all their customers. However, UCC has failed to ensure the security and protection of the said collected data majorly due to the absence of a Privacy and Data Protection Law as envisaged to enforce Article 27 of the 19095 constitution of the republic of Uganda.

It is now public knowledge that the said telecommunication service providers are engaged in Unlawful trade in confidential personal information that was collected during the SIM card registration. They have passed on this information to other agencies and worked in collaboration with the said agencies in total disregard to the customers privacy rights especially as regards personal information/ data.

Wherefore, i wish to request information regarding the steps undertaken by UCC in the last Months to;

a. Investigating the said illegal actions of the service providers

b. Decisions reached by the Communications Tribunal (if at all the matters were forwarded to it)

c. the lists/ names of service providers who unlawfully traded confidential personal information

d. Actions UCC has so far taken to stop the unlawful trade

e. Why is the Privacy and Data Protection Bill 2014 not tabled before parliament

Yours faithfully,

Godfrey
